Tot School 44mo -Apples & Zoo

We began the last week with reading the story of Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden. We talked a lot about sin and that both Satan and Adam & Eve told lies about eating the apple. We did some easy apple themed projects. We cut open an apple and used our magnifying glass to look at the core and the seeds. We did an apple tasting using one unpeeled apple slice, one pealed apple slice and applesauce. I showed the boys how to graph our findings and we counted on the graph different outcomes if other people gave their opinions too. We read The Apple Tree by Zoe Hall and 10 Apples Up On Top by Dr. Sues. Last year I made a small laminated set of apples and a small picture of each boy to go on our felt board. We spent some time adding the apples on the picture’s heads just like in the book. For additional counting fun we played Hi Ho Cherrio but called the fruit apples. Next we made a cherry pie. I don’t really like apple pie so we talked briefly about apples and cherries both being a red fruit. This time we took the short route. We used store-bought pie crust and canned filling but the boys had fun while working on fine motor skills during unrolling the dough and crimping the edges. Because the main point of Adam & Eve was that they lied to God, we read Eli”s Lie-O-Meter by Sandra Levine. Lastly we followed up with a visual about how God always knows when you lie. Nothing is invisible to God. We named several ways that we sin. I took a Q-tip, dipped in lemon juice, to write out a few of our sins on regular white paper. When it completely dried you couldn’t see the writing. When I held the paper over a candle, the acid in the lemon juice turns the writing a light yellow/brown color that reveals what was already there but invisible to us. I have to say, that experiment was challenging because at first Lance didn’t care about what we were doing, all he wanted was to keep blowing out the candle. So remember patience and safety with that project.
We spent the second half of the week working on Noah and the ark. The boys are very curious as to why Noah was the only person that was doing good at that time so we’ve really had bunches of discussions about sin this week. We did a zoo and rainbow theme for this story. We made sounds and movements to match every animal we could think of, we took the kid’s doctor’s kit and became veterinarians to all the teddy bears in the house then did some exploring on our brother too. I cut out a small letter Z and taped it to the bottom of a box. I put a few drops of black paint in the bottom with a marble. The boys shook their box to make the stripes for a zebra. Make sure the bottom of the box is completely flat or the marble will not roll very well, do this even if you want to be lazy that day. Then I wrote their names out in a yellow highlighter. I gave them some crayons and asked them to trace their names in different colors so that it looked like a rainbow. We finished out the week by sorting colored goldfish before we ate them. Tot School 35.5mo Twins – Rainbows


This week we are learning about the story of Noah.  I love that the boys are picking up on what they hear.  This morning I heard the boys talking to each other about animals that were two by two.  It was a good encouragement since you never know how much those little minds are grasping.  To emphasize the story, I talked about why God gave us rainbows.  If you don’t know, it’s a promise from God that He will never again flood the earth and destroy all people.  I had printed off a rainbow from  I taped that down to the kitchen table.  I set two chairs next to each other so the boys could work together on one page.  I started out helping each boy squeeze glue onto an arch of the rainbow.  We started on the inside of the rainbow first.  I gave each boy some fruitloops that corresponded with the arch color and I let them place the fruit loops on the glue.  I helped them learn how to place the loops side by side without much gap.  They each started on the opposite end of the arch and worked towards the middle where they met.  This was a very simple and easy project.  The only thing I had to watch for was them eating the fruitloops.  I had decided to let them do one page together because I didn’t think their attention span would hold doing a full rainbow each.  This worked their hand/eye coordination and their fine motor skills.  No wow factor on this project, but my boys liked it and I like anything that helps them remember the Bible stories that we read.

P.S.  I didn’t even think about what color pattern a real rainbow is, so don’t laugh that it’s out of order.



Tot School 24.5mo twins – What Can You Do With a Rainbow?

A sweet friend recently gave me some left over fabric to make a felt board.  Our library reading time uses the felt board for so many things that I thought we’d give it a try.  I made a very crude and very easy rainbow so we could work on our colors.  I laid each color on the board and had the twins say the color after me.  Then the boys got carried away and started putting all the colors at different spots on the board.  Not what I would have done, but they were saying the colors as they moved them around so I just went with it.  Learning, however way it comes, is the point that I had to remind myself.  Once the novelty of the rainbow ended, I realized that I could rearrange the pieces to make a face.  So the boys touched each part as I called them out and then I had them touch that same feature on their own faces.  They already know their body parts, but a review done in a fun way goes a long way in taking up time and spreading some giggles around.









So the color theme was working for us and I just stayed with it for the past two days.  We have these fun, squishy, soft, yellow and blue blocks.  The boys have way to much fun knocking them down.  So I asked them to alternate the yellow and blue color blocks in the stack.  Their personalities really came out during this.  Lance wants to grab a block and slap it up there.  James looks for the right color, holds it with both hands and tries to set it on the stack neatly lined up.  I make the boys go back to the couch and wait until I say go before they come running at the tower.  While James has control over building, he doesn’t have control over his impulse to run ahead of his brother before mom says go.  I’ve learned that I need to stay in front of the tower until I give the go or else someone will inevitably crash into it before it’s time.  It’s especially sad when James has so carefully stacked the blocks to have Lance crash into it and James’ face looks very sad.  At least I’m thankful that they haven’t learned to retaliate, in this specific situation.  I didn’t get any pictures of the tower, but I did get pictures of the blocks laid out in a pattern that I asked them to do and then we counted the blocks as the boys stepped on each one.


The last thing with color was a craft.  I know other twin moms will back me up here or moms with several young ones very close together in age.  Crafts are hard.  There are moments when you’re working with one that the other feels the freedom to glue things that shouldn’t be glued, eat things that shouldn’t be eaten or rip a page in to.  It’s a constant reminder that I’m not really in control.  I do wish there was an easier way for God to show me that though.  So we went outside and gathered up fallen leaves.  We brought them back in to the table where I placed them as far away from the boys as possible.  I drew a tree trunk and taped the page in front of the boys.  They each had some time to color the trunk in whatever color they wanted.  I put a small amount of glue on the top of the page and showed the boys how to put the leaves on the glue.  They are two years old.  So it didn’t go as smoothly as I wanted.  I helped James put two leaves on, went over to help Lance and saw that James was having a ball moving the two leaves to a new spot every two seconds.  The glue was getting all over the leaves and James.  So I went to help James quickly finish putting all the leaves on and saw Lance doing exactly what James had been doing.  You would think they were apes with all the copying going around here.  So I finished up with James and promptly removed his paper to dry.  Then repeated with Lance. 


After the trees dried, I put them up on the refrigerator.  When we went over to talk about the color of the tree trunks and the leaves, each boy had a big smile on his face.  I’m assuming they liked knowing that their art was on display or maybe they were fondly remembering the mess they had created.  After that we sat at the table and just played with the left over leaves.  What started out was just a rainbow and it led to two fun days discovering colors.  I hope you enjoy all the colors of God’s beautiful creation too.
